Driving in Japan Cost Calculator

Estimate rental + toll + parking + insurance — and avoid the narrow-street trap.

What this solves

Rental cars in Japan are surprisingly affordable (¥4,500-9,000/day for compact) but the hidden costs hit hard: expressway tolls (Tokyo–Kyoto one-way ¥11,000), ETC card rental (¥330/day + ¥5 commission per use), parking (¥300-800/hour in cities, ¥1,500-3,000/day at hotels), insurance excess waiver (¥1,500/day). This tool rolls all in.

Limitations

2026 reference prices. Expressway tolls change at midnight +0 yen on all cars April 2026 (planned at time of writing — verify). Rental rates vary by season (Hokkaido winter 2x). Real parking in Tokyo can hit ¥5,000/night near Shinjuku Station.

FAQ

Do I really need an IDP?

Yes. Without a valid 1949 IDB IDP you cannot legally drive; the rental counter will refuse you. Some countries (Taiwan, Vietnam, Thailand) need an official JAF translation instead. Carrying passport is required at all times.

Should I rent in Tokyo?

Probably not — traffic is heavy, parking is expensive, public transit is excellent. Rent in Kansai (Osaka/Kyoto/Nara) or Hokkaido (Sapporo) where car makes sense.

Why is my IDP valid in Switzerland but not in France?

Both work — France and Switzerland both honor the 1949 IDB IDP. Some countries don't sign the 1949 treaty; for them, Japan requires an official translation via JAF (¥4,000).
