What this solves
Japan's momiji (red maple) and ichō (ginkgo) colors arrive from north to south, then altitude up. Hokkaido peaks in late September; Tokyo mid-November; Kyoto late November to early December. Northern Alps (Kamikochi) are best in early-to-mid October, with a brief 2-3 day peak. The peak window is shorter than sakura — typically 7-10 days.
Plan
How to read results
- 5-level scale: 色づき始め (coloring starts) → 紅葉 (red maple) → 落葉 (falling leaves) → 終わり (ending).
- Forecast updates: JMC issues weekly forecasts from early September onward.
- Night viewing: temples with momiji lit at night — Kyoto Tofukuji, Arashiyama, Kōraku-en, Nikko.
- Ginkgo: peaks 7-10 days later than momiji; famous spots — Meiji Jingu Gaien (Tokyo), Asukayama (Tokyo), Heian-jingu (Namaguchi).
Limitations
Reference for 2026. Year-to-year variation is large; a cold snap shifts peaks 7-10 days earlier. Northern Alps have very short windows (5-7 days) due to early snow.
