What this solves
Generic JR Pass advice says "if you ride long-distance trains daily, buy it." That's incomplete. A 7-day Ordinary Pass is ¥50,000 (2026) ¥29,600 (cheaper standalone ¥29,600 youth) but you also need: (a) ¥4,180 Nozomi surcharge if you use the fastest train; (b) Smart EX ¥550 booking fee per seat; (c) oversized luggage reservation (free at counters). The breakeven point is rarely "Tokyo-Kyoto round trip". This tool adds legs one at a time and shows the marginal cost vs. pass cost.

How to read results
- Pass cost vs. sum-of-legs is the headline metric. If single-ticket sum > pass cost, the pass saves money.
- Tokyo-Kyoto round trip on Hikari alone = ¥26,400 vs. ¥29,600 7-day pass = pass loses ¥3,200. Most Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka itineraries need 3-4 long-distance legs to break even on a 7-day pass.
- If you only ride subways in Tokyo, you do not need a JR Pass. JR Pass covers JR, not Tokyo Metro or Toei Subway.
- Don't count local JR lines (Yamanote, Chuo) — those are too cheap to matter; the pass is meant for long-distance legs.
- Add Tokyo monorail, JR Bus, JR ferry to Hokkaido — those are covered by the pass.
Limitations
2026 reference prices; JR Pass surcharge rules and regional pricing can change at any fiscal year (April 1). Private railways (Kintetsu, Keio, Odakyu, Hankyu, Tokyo Metro, Toei) are NOT covered. If you use a regional pass instead (Kansai Thru, JR Kanto Area), the comparison is different. We don't model reservation availability — only fares.
FAQ
Is the 2026 JR Pass price hike real?
Yes, the JR group raised 7-day to ¥50,000, 14-day to ¥80,000, 21-day to ¥100,000 in October 2023. Authorized tourism + agency discount sites still sell at promotional rates around ¥29,600–¥60,190 depending on exchange rates. The list price is the cap.
Should I buy before or after arrival?
Buy an exchange voucher (MCO) outside Japan, exchange it at JR station on arrival within 3 months, then activate on first use. This is faster and the only way to access 2026 promo pricing.
Are Nozomi/Mizuho covered?
No, since 2020 JR Pass holders must pay ¥4,180/¥8,360 per leg to ride Nozomi/Mizuho. Hikari, Sakura, Kodama, Tsubame, Hayabusa, Hayate, Hakutaka, Kagayaki, Yamabiko, Asama are covered.
What's the smartest JR Pass combo?
Most travelers: 7-day pass concentrated in the second week (Kyoto–Osaka–Hiroshima + return). First week use IC card in Tokyo. This is the classic split-itinerary pattern that maximizes value.
