Restaurant Reservation Difficulty

Walk-in odds by hour for popular chain restaurants.

What this solves

Japan's restaurant-reservation reality is wildly uneven. Some chain restaurants (Sukiya, Matsuya, Yoshinoya) seat you in 5 min. Ichiran Ramen (one-person booth chain) sells tickets from a machine and seats within 15 min even at peak. Kura Sushi (kaiten sushi) often has 1-3 hour wait on weekends. Independent ramen shops can have 30-min queues. Sushi Dai in Tsukiji waits 2-3 hours at 7 AM. This picker accounts for hour + day.

Limitations

Reference for 2026. Real odds depend on weather, special events, and holidays. Tourist-district branches have higher baseline wait than residential. Sushi Dai in Tsukiji relocated to Toyosu in 2018; new Toyosu location is much easier. Sushi Dai waits now ~30-60 min.

FAQ

What is the "ticket machine" system?

At ramen/gyudon chain stores, a vending machine near the entrance lets you buy meal tickets before you sit. Choose the meal (¥700-1,200 typical), insert yen/IC, give ticket to staff. Seats you faster.

Can I bring my child?

Most chains yes (high chairs). Some kaiten sushi are family-tension-free with no smoking. Independent sushiya often 12+ only.

What if I have dietary restrictions?

Most chain restaurants have allergen sheets. Sushi sushi variety has vegetarian. Ask for "yasai maki" (vegetable roll) or "edamame".
