Tax-Free Souvenir Calculator

¥5,000 minimum threshold + consumables vs general goods.

What this solves

Tax-free shopping in Japan lets tourists avoid the 10% consumption tax on goods they take out of Japan. Common confusion: the ¥5,000 minimum must be met in the SAME store on the SAME day, and the rules differ for "consumables" (food, cosmetics) vs "general goods" (electronics, clothing). Tax-free has two flavors: in-store deduction (you pay tax-free immediately but goods must be sealed) and airport-claim refund (you pay full price, claim later).

Limitations

Reference for 2026. Rules can change with National Tax Agency updates. Some stores exclude certain items (alcohol, tobacco, batteries, software). Tax-free is for tourists staying under 6 months — residents must declare purchases at import.

FAQ

Can I claim tax-free at multiple stores?

Yes, but each store independently applies the ¥5,000 minimum. You cannot combine across them. So a ¥3,000 purchase at each of two stores does not qualify.

Can I split purchases?

Yes, two purchases at the same store on the same day count together. The cashier will manually combine them. Ask before paying.

What if I'm caught with opened consumables at customs?

Customs officers assess tax at 10% on the original purchase price. They have discretion to confiscate.
